As one of the largest iron ore producers globally, headquartered in Australia, the mining giant regularly emphasizes the safety of its employees as its number one priority and strives to maintain its stature as a global leader in ensuring the health of its team continuously.

Client Challenge

As part of their consistent efforts to meet their explicitly stated objective of being a ‘global leader in safety’ in the industry, the executive team continuously strives to improve its track record around meeting and exceeding annual targets of:

1. Achieving 0 fatalities

2. Reducing their Risk Profile by 15%

3. Maintaining Total Recordable Incident Frequency Rate (TRIFR) - rate of recordable injuries that occur per million hours worked - below the global resources industry’s lowest quartile

4. Maintaining a TRIFR below 4.0

InterKnowlogy was brought in to assess material risks around six of company’s assets in a multi-stakeholder project to improve its processes in line with the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) standards.

Partnership in Review

With InterKnowlogy’s support and using the Process Safety Management (PSM) approach for mitigating risks, the company was able to analyze 21 different risks across its assets and define critical controls performance criteria. As part of instilling a culture of ‘safety first’, workshops & training were also provided to over 300 employees to empower them to improve the resource giant’s PSM approach, Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA) process and critical control management.

Outcome

Today, the organization is able to boast that it has almost consistently been able to meet and beat the aforementioned targets over the past few years. The company continues to strive for excellence in its number one priority - the health, safety and wellbeing of its family – through a myriad of different initiatives.
