As Sweden's 2026 election unfolded into a closely contested race, SVT used new interactive capabilities from InterKnowlogy (IK) to show viewers how results, projected seats and potential governing coalitions changed throughout election night.

As Sweden's public broadcaster, Sveriges Television (SVT) is an integral source for live election coverage. Its election programming starts months in advance, from early polling results to the first returns on election night, then through days of post-election analysis as late results and regional detail come in.
SVT first used IK Election Insights in 2022. The 2026 engagement extended that deployment with new ways to show how a close result developed over the course of the night.
With eight major parties competing and no realistic path to single-party government, the 2026 outcome came down to coalition arithmetic. The opposition ultimately secured 176 seats to the Tidö bloc's 173, a three-seat margin that made every shift in the projected results significant.
SVT political commentator Fouad Youcefi again anchored the analysis from two interactive screens, driving the data himself while he spoke to viewers.
SVT's analysis hinged on whether either bloc cleared the majority threshold, as projected seat totals shifted throughout the evening. As districts reported and projections were revised, SVT wanted Fouad to show those changes on screen at his own pace, with the flexibility to revisit earlier results and explain how the race was developing.
For 2026, SVT needed a visualization experience that could:
This time around, IK Election Insights was hosted and operated in IK's Microsoft Azure environment. Many new capabilities were added:
All these features worked alongside the existing Build a Government tool and other 2022 election features that were maintained and improved.
SVT supplied election data through its APIs and sourced projections from a team of election data scientists.
Each refinement was judged by how it performed live, with Fouad reaching the right view at the right moment without interrupting his analysis. Two of the most consequential changes came directly from his requests.
Time Travel, new in 2026, made earlier states of the night's results available for analysis. Fouad could drag the timeline to a given hour, step through it, or play it forward and pause where the picture changed.
Combined with Build a Government, Time Travel allowed Fouad to show how the two blocs' seat totals shifted throughout the evening, at times separated by only one or two seats and close to the majority threshold.

Forecast displayed projected seats for the eight major parties, using projections provided by a team of election data scientists. SVT built a segment around it, with cameras at each party's headquarters to capture reactions as the figures were announced.
The initial implementation displayed all eight projections at once. Roughly 24 hours before the broadcast, with IK's Cyrus Doomasia on site in Stockholm, Fouad requested an enhancement whereby each party's seat count figure appears only when he tapped the party name, so the reveal would follow his commentary and the cut to each headquarters. IK implemented the change before air.
The adjustment gave Fouad direct control over the pacing of the segment, allowing each projected seat count to appear in sequence with his commentary and the live reactions from party headquarters.
The Eurovision-style reveal attracted international attention, with coverage of the segment spreading beyond Sweden.
New heat maps visualized demographic measures such as income, education and more on the map, replacing the tables SVT had used in earlier elections. SVT also requested distinct colour treatments for polling and forecast views, with adjustments informed by studio lighting, where low-contrast colours and backgrounds can be difficult to distinguish on the viewers’ televisions.
For 2026, IK took over hosting and operation of the platform. In 2022, IK supplied the application as software containers that SVT deployed in its own environment. Think of containers as ready-to-run software packets. This was required because of election related cybersecurity concerns. This cycle, the platform ran in IK's Microsoft Azure environment, shifting responsibility for hosting and infrastructure maintenance from SVT's team to IK.
SVT continued to provide election results and forecasts through its APIs. IK integrated these data feeds into the interactive application, supporting live analysis and the new 2026 capabilities.

SVT's election coverage reached 3.25 million television viewers, while SVT Play – the video on demand service offered by Sveriges Television – recorded more than 3.4 million streams by the following day. SVT's team unanimously described it as one of their smoothest elections, requiring no technical interventions from IK during the live broadcast.
The new capabilities gave SVT more flexibility in how it presented and explained the race. Time Travel allowed Fouad to revisit earlier results and demonstrate how the coalition picture evolved, while the Forecast reveal supported a coordinated live segment with reactions from each party's headquarters.
The platform also continued to support SVT's coverage after election night. Fouad used Time Travel more extensively during subsequent analysis, alongside regional and municipal views to examine local results and respond to viewer questions submitted through social media.
Beyond the broadcast, SVT and its educational partners, including UR, distributed a simplified version of the election experience to teachers and students, with IK supporting the technical adaptation. Available approximately five months before the vote, it recorded about 6,000 unique academic users across the week before and the week after election day.
The 2026 election marked the latest chapter in SVT and IK's collaboration, building on the 2022 Swedish elections and 2024 EU and US elections work. Each iteration has introduced new capabilities, advancing IK Election Insights as a powerful platform for visualizing election results and helping viewers make sense of complex election data.
IK Election Insights gives political analysts and producers an interactive view of live election data, adapted to each broadcaster's electoral system and studio workflow. Book a demo today to see it in action.
